Interview: Bombpops at the Voltage Lounge

5/22/17 – The Voltage Lounge was host to Red City Radio, The Bombpops and Russian Girlfriends as they stopped in Philadelphia as a part of their huge national tour.  The tiny club offered a no-frills setting though the narrow space upstairs held the merch and additional vantage points.  For those of us who stayed on the floor, it was an intimate event.

Exclusive: Maximalism With Olof of Amaranthe

Standing outside the venue of Reading, PA’s Reverb, the moon slowly peeks up over the hills. It’s 28ºF outside and the line is beginning to wrap around the building. Some passerby might wonder why anybody would subject themselves to sub-freezing temperatures just to wait in line. Well, the answer is simple. This is the final night of Amaranthe’s Maximalism USA/ Canada tour. Continue reading Exclusive: Maximalism With Olof of Amaranthe

Exclusive: Save Ferris Shows Off Their ‘New Sound’ at Underground Arts

Save Ferris’ new EP ‘Checkered Past’ is available now on Withyn Records.

March 2nd, 2017 – When Save Ferris hung it up in the early 2000s, the ska world lost a little something special. Sure, there were still bands from the 90s soldiering on, but this was one of the more definitive nails in the coffin of the third wave of ska.

In 2013, after a particularly invasive neck surgery and legal battle with her former bandmates, frontwoman Monique Powell resurrected Save Ferris with a new backing band. They played some shows here and there to much acclaim and after a wildly successful Pledgemusic campaign, Save Ferris released an EP called Checkered Past full of all new music.

A few years ago, Henry and a mutual friend conducted an interview with Buddy (trombone) of Less Than Jake written by me. In a lot of ways, even though I had never spoken to Chris (guitar and vocals), this felt like a follow-up. They didn’t have a lot to report in terms of new developments, but we dove into the election theme of their Warped shows, why they have been putting out some of their best work lately, possible future ways they will be releasing music, releasing a live album…. that was recorded 15 years earlier and their 5th annual Wake and Bake Festival in Gainesville, FL. You can see a ska show at any point in the year, but there is something about seeing Reel Big Fish outside in the summertime. The combination of sunshine, Hawaiian shirts, horns and upbeat songs goes together so well.

A few years prior, I had the pleasure of talking to then-drummer Ryland Steen about Candy Coated Fury. Since then, they have put out an EP of holiday-inspired songs Happy Skalidays. This time, I spoke to Derek Gibbs (bass) about releasing Happy Skalidays on gold vinyl, future recording plans (and difficulties complicating that), future tours and the hot sauces that they just released.
